Rating: 1 (out of 5). FX brings back George Lopez in a new sitcom, “Saint George.” The series stars Lopes as a divorced entrepreneur who made a fortune by marketing an energy drink. George has two sidekicks in the show. His uncle is played by Danny Trejo and his cousin, played by David Zayas. Both are trying to get George to start dating again. The critics are not fans of the show with the most positive review calling it “mediocre.” Variety doesn’t pull any punches calling the series a “numbingly awful multicamera sitcom that plays like something conjured in a lab once the presumably magical ingredient “George Lopez” was acquired.” Newsday says “There’s no authentic life to “Saint George” beyond the setup/joke/laugh formula and its witless, gamy punchlines.” The New York Post calls the show a “disappointment” and says it is “cookie-cutter and one-dimensional — with thinly written characters and, most notably, a hyperactive laugh track that’s really grating.” They give the cast credit as they try “to wring laughs out of a tepid script, and I’m guessing whoever was working the laugh track was told to sweeten it — a lot.” The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette simply calls it “another mediocre, three-camera sitcom with nothing new to say.” They comment on the style of humor in the show saying it “tries to humanize George by making him pathetic – he hasn’t dated since his divorce 13 months ago and his mother mocks him.” The Philadelphia Daily News is keeping their expectations low “Based on the penis- and fat-joke-ridden pilot – titled Won’t Get Fooled Again“. Minneapolis Star-Tribune calls “Saint George” a “fairly witless affair.” They think George should “grow up”, saying the premise of the show is “all fine if you’re 21, but for a 52-year-old comedian” it is juvenile. The New York Times calls the sitcom “wearying”. They love George Lopes and what he has accomplished, but say “if the premiere episode is any indication, Mr. Lopez seems merely to be recycling setups from other anemic comedies and, if anything, making them worse.” The Washington Post says “The show is a textbook example of what goes wrong when a sitcom tries to dispel stereotypes mostly by reinforcing them.” They give it no stars indicating that “The number of penis jokes are but one indication that “Saint George” is only concerned with making sure that everyone in America has an equal opportunity at making terrible television.” - hereistv/?p=32935
