Re: Dallas Animal Shelter facing $1.6 million in budget cuts Please be aware of a recent recommendation by the City of Dallas’ budget committee to eliminate $1.6 million in necessities at Dallas Animal Services. The budget committee calls these necessities “enhancements”. Some of the things our shelter is at risk of losing are: • Staffing to bring shelter up to national standards • Staffing to allow timely response to safety calls and emergency situations • Staffing to maintain the PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center that has had over 1,000 pet adoptions in eight months • Vaccinations to all animals on intake, to protect staff, volunteers and visitors and prevent transmission of disease • Cleaning supplies to reduce cross contamination and exposure to disease • Canned food for the young, sick and ill animals • Property maintenance to keep facility in compliance with City code • Repair and replacement of broken equipment • Purchase of a backup generator These cuts would increase euthanasia rates, decrease the availability of vaccinations, and put further strain on independent rescue groups to pull quicker from DAS in order to save lives. There is a petition that we feel needs 10,000 signatures before the next City Council meeting on June 18th (as well as people in attendance) to get the attention on council members. We currently are only at about 4,100. As you know, saving animals is a large effort and now it depends on the entire Dallas community to rally behind it.
