Re: Doug Engelbart Institute Grand Challenge dougengelbart.org/challenge/index.html which is such an apt way to invite a new generation to venture together collaboratively, imaginatively, creatively, and iteratively in pursuit of a better future for humanity. Doug Engelbarts call to action is even more viable and pressing today as the scope and method of interaction and collaboration become increasingly distributed, networked, cross-functional, cross-disciplinary, cross-organizational, cross-cultural, interdependent, complex, and urgent on a global scale — just as he predicted. His prescription for the technology is essentially a checklist of what is still missing in todays tools that, when embedded in our knowledge ecosystems, will enable us to make quantum leap improvements in the way we work together on important challenges in business and society. --DougEngelbart.org So KUDOS to Elon Musk - for outlining the five technologies and innovations that will radically change human life in the coming decade. Rasmussen compares Stamets to visionary entrepreneur-scientists like Thomas Edison or “some of the truly fine amateur naturalists or astronomers of the 17th and 18th centuries — people who were experts in their fields, but had other ways to occupy their days. Paul Stamets is a modern example of the amateur scientist from the 17th and 18th century who made wonderful contributions with only their native curiosity and keen sense of observation, explains Eric Rasmussen, a former Navy physician and researcher for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the National Science Foundation, who now heads for Google.org INSTEDD (Innovative Support to Emergencies Diseases and Disasters), a Google-funded nonprofit that develops technology to control disease outbreaks. Hes listened to in a lot of unexpected corners. In 1997, Battelle, a nonprofit R&D lab and a major Defense Department contractor, asked to screen more than two dozen strains of Stamets fungi. A few years later, it sent him back a classified report revealing the mushrooms to be highly effective in breaking down the neurotoxin VX, the illegal chemical weapon. Soon afterward, DARPA invited Stamets to one of its brainstorming sessions. Ive seen the lab results. I know it has potential, says Rasmussen of INSTEDD. What I dont know is how it performs in clinical trials. And thats a deeply frustrating situation to be in—to see this level of activity against nasty bacteria and viruses and not have the ability to begin clinical trials and work up the scale to human trials and see what the most effective delivery method is, what the dosing needs to be, what the side effects will be—and I think there will be very few. I mean, its a mushroom, for Gods sake. In order to resolve it, it is not appropriate to reject any of them, but needs to consolidate them at higher level of abstraction, lets say as B1 frame. This agreement of B1 frame is the collective intelligence of A1.A2,A3,,,. If the problem was something that relates to even wider area like world wide issue, then this B1 will have different opinions at the B level like B1,B2,B3,,,. So it needs be consolidated again at even higher level abstraction like C1 with the collective intelligence of B1,B2,B3,,,. As the abstraction goes higher, it covers wider areas and at the end it will cover world wide area and it will be possible by collective IQ of world wide people. Thus to me, the most critical for this is our open mind set to collaborate with others toward the unity of the world/SOURCE, and all the others has to be treated as tools. I hope you join this group to further enrich the model by bringing your experience and the model and expand the community for the implementation toward the harmony/unity of the world. --Hirohide Yamada
