Re Jadavpur University (JU): This is a continuation of my previous post where I argued that as a public University whose funding comes from people’s taxes, the stakeholders and interested citizens have a right to know the details of their leadership and hence the detailed resume of the VC of JU must be posted in the public domain after being reviewed by an unbiased committee for its factuality. Now some more along those line, at this point I believe that the discourse on more individualized demand to choose who would be the leader of JU should be taken into the more public discourse pertaining to the right of the stakeholders to choose their leaders. As I said before, since JU is a public institution all the salaries and contractual wages are coming from people’s tax money, hence, ALL the immediate stakeholders and ultimately ALL tax paying citizens have the RIGHT to send their representatives and their voices to be heard in choosing the top leadership of this institution. Now one observation here: Are the PARENTS of the students involved in this? From a personal and a political position if I were a parent, I would have formed a PARENT GROUP (this is done in K-XII schools if there is a demand) and demanded my voice to be heard in the recent problem and the choice of the top leadership. Since our society is still based on the notion of private ownership of parental lineage, I would argue first, that as a parent I am a stakeholder, second, as a tax payer I am also a stakeholder, and last of all, as I am responsible for providing in the making of a citizen (again as families are “privatized” and education and upbringing are still “private” responsibility of families, more or less), I have the right to be represented and to voice my opinion in the institution which also includes the right to voice my choice for the top leadership.
