Re: Newage shamanism The common term shamanism was coined ( literally) by Michael harner. I am Irish jew and maybe more - havent explored my southern roots - could have some black mama hatian in me for all I know! Anyway there seems to be some sense of ownership over the ways and means of the newage term shaman and who has the right to call themselves shaman. For this reason, I rarely use this term in the work I do. I am a natural native healer My abilities to heal are no better or different than anyone elses. And in fact I cannot heal anyone - nor can any doctor. Our bodies heal our cells! We as healers can assist this process through medicine. The medicine of the natural healer just may not look like the ones we westerners are used to seeing in this modern age. but not many years ago, the medicine AND the healing arena was in peoples homes NOT in offices and hospitals. In my tradition, we use many things to assist in the healing process and although the format may be the same - like apothecary compounds each healing formula is created uniquely for the individual, the organism or even the system that is being worked on to bring into whole balance. the Druid and jewish Traditions of healing does not relegate a specilness to the healer Anyone who chooses can study the art of healing. It is no different than choosing to study cooking, mechanics, bridge building philosophy or any other profession. I am not sure WHEN or WHY this ancient profession got linked with the elect , but in my tradition and in many traditions around the world this idea of specialness just isnt a part of being a healer. And to be honest, I beleive that his idea of specialness shamans really is something the newage movement made up probably to cash in on the financial benefits of it becasue from everything i know of native american thinking the idea of unique individual specialness is an abhorant idea.
