Re: Population-wide BRCA testing Recent research showing increased cancer risk for individuals with BRCA mutations but no family history of cancer has led to the proposal that all women be offered genetic testing for mutations in BRCA genes. Population-wide screening for BRCA mutations is a departure from current evidence-based national guidelines on genetic testing. Many women who meet current national guidelines are not getting the recommended genetic counseling and testing—and have difficulty obtaining coverage of needed screening and/or preventive measures. Expanding testing to all women, of whom an estimated 1 in 300-500 will have a mutation, would significantly lower the threshold for testing. FORCE is currently working with our scientific advisory board and other experts to examine the research evidence and consider the benefits, risks, and potential impacts of changing guidelines in order to effectively weigh in on these proposed changes in health care practices. In the meantime, we will continue our work to assure that all individuals concerned about hereditary cancer risk have access to the information, screening, and preventive services they need to make the best decisions regarding their health care.
