Re-Thinking Health and Living Space: Product #Design by Liviana Osti Liviana Osti is a young product #designer educated in foreign languages and literature, journalism, and naval engineering, who has now dedicated her education and work to visual #communication and design, which she studies at the Free University of #Bolzano. Her work includes product design, the most well known of which is a #carafe made with blown pyrex in the shape of a human #heart, while her communication design includes work such as a book depicting the everyday pleasures of life. Osti’s work is not simply intended to create aesthetically pleasing items, but rather, to fulfill specific functions which are both practical and suggestive. Much of Osti’s product design work is related to food and drink with an emphasis on health. Her human heart carafe is which is formed of two separate pieces: a wine #decanter and a water carafe which can be joined together. She states that it is meant as a reference to wine’s connection with heart health as well as a reminder to drink the same amount of water as wine. Another piece, entitled #Pippo, is a cheese grater in the form of a paper airplane which is concieved as a reminder to use fatty parmesan lightly. Other work by Osti focuses on creating comfortable home spaces. One of such is a series of modified #chairs which she states can “become actors with personalities” rather than simply a “neutral spectator.” These chairs take various forms which allow individuals to sit in non-traditional ways which can be used for personal comfort or to enrich interactions. A similar product is the “parasit,” a flexible surface designed for use in small spaces in order to provide more flat space for use without taking up too much room. livianaosti
