Re-Thinking Rosé by Rolf Holly Take a moment and imagine yourself on the patio. Its a blisteringly hot day, and youre under an umbrella enjoying a Mediterranean style meal incorporating olive oil, garlic, herbs, spices and fresh seafood such as shrimp, crab, lobster or flaky white fish. As these flavors dance in you mouth, you are overcome by thirst. Instinctively, you reach for your wine glass of ice cold rosé. Ahhhhhh!!! Now thats thirst quenching! So satisfying, in fact, that Daniel Johnnes, one of Americas top sommeliers, says rosés are brilliantly suited to a more casual but full-flavored cuisine. Picnics as well, with assorted sandwiches and salads are perfect for a bottle of rosé such as Domaine le Clos des Lumieres Rosé ($11.99 wine of the week). Another great Summer wine that is food friendly is Sauvignon Blanc. Many people are familiar with the delicious Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand and California but have yet to experience the unique terroir of Chile. Caliterra Sauvignon Blanc ($11.99 wine of the week) is produced in Chiles Colchagua Valley, a sub-region known for its full-bodied wines. Caliterra was started in 1996 as a partnership with the famous Mondavi family. Caliterras Sauvignon Blanc displays intense aromas of citrus and minerals rounded out by notes of tropical fruit. This is definetely a style of Sauvignon Blanc that should be experienced! Please make plans this week to stop by and experience these great Summer wines, and join me in re-thinking rosé! Cheers, Rolf
