Re: aggression Many people I speak to still refer to and talk about aggression as if its an illness. They speak of aggression in dogs as if it defines their dog; who he is is aggressive. Theres a few things I want to clear up or bring enlightenment to in regards to the majority of aggression cases (this doesnt account for medical issues or mental distinction in dogs) 1) aggression is a BEHAVIOUR not a personality trait. To label any dog aggressive is an over simplification of the problem. 2) aggression is a natural communication tool for dogs. Growling, showing teeth, air snapping and in the last ditch effort, biting are typically used to AVOID confrontation, not start one. 3) Aggression very rarely occurs outside of a highly aroused and stressed state of mind… these dogs are what I have come to refer to as adrenalized or in adrenaline (term stollen from Chad Mackin). Dogs in this stet find it very hard—sometimes impossible—to make choices at all, let alone make the right choices. We must first help the dog find calm, then replace the new mind in the old scenario to help him understand the choices he makes. 4) a well structured relationship and solid obedience training is the number 1 cure for aggression and aggressive behaviour. No one single type of correction or food treat will do it. 5) EVERY DOG WITH TEETH AND A HEART BEAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BITE. Thats right, even your I-love-everybody Lab. But hed have to be pushed further than the Im-scared-of-my-shadow German Shepherd. If you want more information on aggression, consult a local trainer to help you better understand the nature of dog behaviour.
