Re-posting this status from March. We have a lot of people new to AABR and new to rescue on our page. Heres what you need to know about us - Last night we posed a question to our fans - Are you new to rescue and if so, do you need a quick tutorial? The answer was yes from enough folks that we figured wed take a few minutes to give you a rundown. Generally speaking, a rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of abandoned or unwanted pets. We may take in animals from shelters or directly from owners who can no longer keep them. Rescues provide necessary vet care, update vaccinations and will spay/neuter the animals in their care. The pet will be fostered by a volunteer until a new home is found. If you want to adopt from a rescue, you will need to apply and go through an approval process which should include reference and vet checks, along with a home visit. Some rescues have additional requirements (fencing or no children) and others are more lenient. Any a good rescue will require regular contact throughout the pets life and will take the animal back into rescue if anything goes wrong. Some rescues have a facility to house animals, but most do not. If you find a rescue that does not at least follow these general guidelines, I would conduct some research before adopting from them. You want a partner as you search for your new family member! Adopt a Boxer Rescue focuses on boxers needing homes in the northeast region of the US. We are a 501c3 organization (making your donations tax deductible) and entirely staffed by volunteers. There are no salaries, no overhead and no fancy marketing budgets here! Where we adopt to is limited by where our volunteers live. Currently, we cover CT south through the DC metro area, but there are pockets within that range that may not work for us - home visits are a must! Our dogs are either in private foster homes or waiting in paid kennels for a home to open up for them. We are proud to place about 300 boxers in new homes every year! So what happens when we get a call or email about a dog who needs help? We first send a local volunteer out to meet the dog and do an initial assessment. That tells us whether the dog needs to get to the vet right away or whether they will fit into any open foster homes. Once accepted into AABR, all dogs receive the medical care they need, are neutered, micro-chipped and fed high quality food - possibly for the first time in their lives. The volunteer or foster home writes up a short bio on the dog and we get them listed on our website and FB. While in foster, we are getting to know the dog - what do they like or dislike, how are they with other pets, do they need basic training, are they housebroken, etc. The foster homes work with the dogs to make sure they receive socialization, affection and the chance to be dogs! When an applicant is approved, we will then match up the adopter with a dog that is the best fit. The adopter is put in touch with the foster and a meeting is arranged. If all goes well, a boxer gets a new home! We at AABR pride ourselves on taking in dogs that other rescues may shy away from. We can (and have) spent thousands on medical care for a single dog. We have sent dogs for extensive behavioral training, too. We firmly believe they all deserve a chance at a happy life and if it is within our power to provide one, we will. Medical cases and puppy mill survivors arrive on a regular basis, weve had mamas with puppies, puppies without mamas and sometimes a recent mama with no puppies. Weve brought in stud dogs from puppy mills and dogs who had been abandoned or neglected to the point of cruelty. They are all given a second chance at living with love. What do we do when we are not actively caring for our dogs? Fundraising and education! We receive no public funding, so those thousands we spend have to be found somewhere. And somehow, our supporters always come through for us when we need them the most! We love you guys as much as you love us ♥ So, thats AABR in a nutshell. Feel free to ask anything else you want to know and we will try to answer everyone.
