Re the comment thread on Ms Chesler below -- how can I be so misread? I am not bashing Ms Ali, I carefully challenged some comments she made that are sweeping negative generalizations about Islam. And how can anyone think that I, who have been campaigning against genital mutilation for 23 years, could possibly be endorsing or whitewashing it? I have a chapter on the psychological trauma as well as physical that it does in my most recent book, for instance...and how can anyone say I am libeling Ms. Chesler when I raised a question about funding and asked for a denial if this is not correct? Libel is making a false assertion. It was not an assertion and we are trying to find out about truth or falsehood which is what journalism is supposed to do. Part of why I feel strongly that pro-Israel money does enter the media stream is that I for instance constantly battle assertions from the right wing or pro-Israel side of the debate that I support the hijab or genital mutilation when these actually are real libels, and anyone glancingly familiar with my work knows how wrong that is. In my experience random commenters who are just misinformed somehow dont make this kind of consistent pattern to smear someones reputation on an issue, it does take a campaign of some kind.
