Re-visited Ben Pakulski interviewing Jacob Wilson/John Meadows (Ep 3) this morning, and it really is worth a listen. Interesting discussion of metabolic flexibility - what fuel source your body’s more likely to use depending on what you consume first thing in the morning, and nutrient timing, specifically carbohydrate timing. I myself, have noticed a big change in my physique/energy levels/training performance since paying more attention to timing of nutrients. It looks at why you might opt out of a high carb breakfast if the goal is to stay lean, and you’ve not done any intense training. Or perhaps you have the day before but if youve taken in sufficient carbs post-workout John Meadows makes the point that - unless you wake up in the middle of the night and train, your carbohydrate stores in your muscles are pretty much intact.” Your muscles store glycogen at the end of the day, and yes you are insulin-sensitive first thing in the morning, but if you haven’t trained or your glycogen stores in muscle cells are already saturated, your fat cells are going to potentially store those carbs, as they too are sensitive. It’s definitely something to consider. A low carb breakfast isn’t for everyone (would depend on timing of workouts/goals/individual response/the type of training you do etc.) but it does make a lot of sense to base carbs around training, if youre looking to stay lean. And as always, I would experiment to see what works for you, as everyone responds differently.
