Re-watching the first season of The Following. Was massively disappointed by how silly it was when it first aired, and hated James Purefoys hammy performance, but the knowledge that it would be trashy and dumb as hell helped me enjoy season 2 a lot more. Watching season 1 again and quite enjoying it, I think the shows biggest problem has always been two competing tones. Writer Kevin Williamson (Scream) has tried to make something quite fun and have a dig at serial killer cliches, and James Purefoy is very much in on the joke as the pompous, pretentious, turtleneck sporting serial killer/cult leader/failed author at the centre of the story. Unfortunately, someone else is desperately trying to push this as a serious, intelligent, hardcore horror series, and it does not have the stones AT ALL.
