The mosquito borne disease is starting to spread throughout the United States, with the latest reports arising in South Florida. Chikungunya virus spreads locally in Florida for the first timeThe first cases of locally acquired chikungunya fever in the United States were reported Thursday in Florida: one in Miami-Dade County and the other in Palm Beach County, the Florida Department of Health announced. With the virus being spread mostly by the two breeds of mosquito, Aedes aegypti (also known as the dengue mosquito) and Aedes albopictus, it’s interesting to find out a little more about how to identify the little pests. To most people, all mosquitoes look or appear to look the same. Therefore, here’s a little bit of awareness information for you. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes These mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting viruses that cause dengue to hundreds of thousands of people. They may also transmit other viruses to people including chikungunya and yellow fever. It’s interesting to note that these types of mosquitoes tend to bite during the day, so therefore we need to ensure we use a mosquito repellant not just when we thought we were most vulnerable (in the evenings, or near water), but pretty much 24/7. Taking that time out to take precautions would appear far more preferable than having to deal with a bite like this: - (Warning: Don’t watch if your squeamish) If that’s not made you reach for the repellant then nothing will!
