Read: Ephesians 6:1-9; Luke 13:22-30 With all the talk of slaves, it is easy to dismiss the whole of the first reading as being irrelevant to our modern age if not dismiss it completely as being a totally wrong approach to relationships in a more enlightened age. But in that reading there is still a relevance for those of us who can at times feel alienated from our work and our life. Paul tells us, when we feel cheated by life, when there is no pleasure in what we are doing, no satisfaction from our work, then do it for God and he will reward us for what we do. Indeed, as Christians, in all that we do, we should do it for God and he will reward our efforts. There is nothing too small, too unimportant that cannot be offered to God, there is nothing too small, too unimportant that he will not accept because he sees the love with which it is offered. Everything therefore takes on a new importance when it is offered in love. In this way we will not simply be people who profess our faith and devotion to God, we will be people of action, for as we know the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the narrow door is entered only by those whose actions realise their good intentions.
