Read: Hebrews 1:1-6; Mark 1:14-20 There is an urgency, not of limited time, but of the importance of the message that comes from the readings today. It is not a sale ends soon urgency, but this is the only show in town urgency. There are many different religions offering many different ways to live your life and attain perfection and there is good in all of them, some of the adherents of these religions are more devout, more religious than many Christians and even live better and more charitable lives than Christians. But the urgency of the message is not about the observance of which way of life brings us to a better perfection, the urgency of the message is that it is only in Christ that perfection comes to us. Is this not somewhat conceited, to claim such uniqueness? The claim of Christianity is based on the truth that nothing we can do will by itself bring us to perfection. There is too much brokenness and sin in our life. Perfection will have to be given to us and the way that God has chosen to do this is through his Son who is Christ. It is his grace alone that will crown all our human efforts and bring them to the perfection we seek. The urgency comes from our search for perfection and joy in finding that finally it has become possible for us.
