Read: Hebrews 4:1-5. 11; Mark 21:1-12 I don’t know why I believe and others don’t. I suppose it must be a gift. I would like to think faith makes me a better person: more caring and considerate; it pushes me to think of others when I might otherwise just think of myself. That too is a gift because I recognise that it does not come from my own instincts. There are many who have heard the same words about Christ as I have, but they heard something different, because they have heard without faith, so they didn’t really listen to what was being said; to them it was simply more words, words that didn’t prompt any action in their life. Unlike the friends in the Gospel who brought the man that was paralysed: they heard Jesus with faith and his words led them to action. The scribes didn’t hear with faith however, so the words that Jesus spoke about forgiveness of sin seemed like blasphemy, they seemed nonsense. If we hear with faith though, we understand what Jesus was saying. We understand that the healing Jesus brings and that comes to us in faith is healing for the whole person; it is new joy, new hope: it is new life. But it comes only in faith and it is a gift. We should take care of that gift and cherish it.
