Read Luke 6:1-11 Recently, I discovered computer glasses. These yellow-tinted reading glasses are designed to ease eye strain at the word processor. Every time I don them, the effect on my hardworking eyes is dramatic. Instantly, my eyes feel refreshed. The religious leaders in todays passage had, you might say, a strained view of the Sabbath commandment. They focused only on what work couldnt be done on that day of rest. Their list of forbidden activities even included necessities such as gathering food and healing the sick. Along came Jesus, on the Sabbath, eating corn picked in a field and healing a mans withered hand. The Pharisees were enraged. Jesus reminded them, however, that King David had gathered food on the Sabbath. The Savior even performed a miracle in their midst. But the religious leaders, focused on their own interpretation of the commandment, remained blinded to its true meaning. Its easy to don the lens of legalism and miss the true rest that comes by keeping our eyes on Jesus. Its easy to forget He finished, on the cross, the only work that matters, so that all who believe can enter into the true rest (Hebrews 4:3). from 365 Devotions
