Read Psalm 122 The Church struggles through the ages. Each generation brings new challenges for those who have been faithful Christians for many years. I remember when “How Great Thou Art” became popular. Our church secretary typed out the words. Carbon paper made it possible to make several copies at a time. Then she glued them into the front of the hymnal. Every time we sang it we did so with rebel gusto. We were on the “cutting edge” with this new hymn. Older members were appalled at our endeavors. Old timers have shook their heads at kids wearing jeans in church, guitars at Mass, drums at the contemporary service and coffee in the sanctuary. There are certain things you just don’t do, say, wear or sing in Church. It is Holy Ground. As a child I used to think that the church was God’s house and that was the only place I could find him. I’ve been blessed by mentors, teachers, friends, Scripture, devotions that have broadened that concept for me. A few weeks ago I attended the Great Plains UMW Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska. The speaker and song leader was wonderful. We sang “We are Standing On Holy Ground.” Then he said quite simply “Whenever you are standing where God has called you to be your feet are planted on holy ground,” How wonderful! “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’ Our feet are standng wthin your gates, O Jerusalem.” This second Sunday of Advent be glad. The Lord is definitely calling you to praise him in worship. But on all the rest of the days -- pay attention. Where is it that God has called you to be? Where have you stood on surprising Holy Ground? Sing “We Are Standing On Holy Ground.”
