Read about our wonderful Reiki Forum held in Hamilton last Saturday. Reiki and Zumba Isn’t it wonderful how the universal magic always stops us from taking Reiki too seriously? Waikato Reiki Forum began planning its first event at the beginning of the year. A week before the big day we discovered that a popular Zumba class in the same community centre overlapped for the first hour of the event. Reiki (of course) held the answer. We sent distance Reiki for a smooth and quiet event and that was exactly what we got. Zumba wasn’t cancelled but nothing disturbed our opening prayer and the tone was set for a light-hearted, and open-hearted day. Dance music aside, the Waikato Reiki Forum far and away exceeded the committee’s expectations as 40 plus Reiki folk joined together in Hamilton from as far afield as the Bay of Plenty, Auckland and Wellington. The Forum offered a varied and wide-ranging programme of talks, workshops, meditation, distance and hand-Reiki practice that gave everyone ‘food for thought’ from Level 1 students to experienced teachers and included subjects that reflected the committee’s skills and interests. Our over-riding premise for the event became a corruption of the famous Forrest Gump quote – ‘Reiki is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you are going to get...but it’s all going to be perfect and you will enjoy it.’ And the day flowed perfectly. It was truly nurturing and inspiring, and was efficiently led by MC Angela Lovell. Alan Trust moved us with a talk of his Reiki journey in Ngaruawahia and working with the Maori royal family. Pip Oxlade got us to our feet teaching us to body dowse and introducing aspects of Theta healing and Karuna Reiki. Sarah Deeks transported us back to primary school art class as we connected with our creative side and sub-conscious. Patricia Harvey presented a delightful Power Point on working with Reiki in the garden from seed sowing to harvest. It wasn’t just a day of talks and workshops. There was lots of time for much needed Reiki practice and meditation. Caterina Findsen gently guided us to clear our chakras, Yolanda Chomondeley-Smith facilitated a seated Reiki session – a new experience for some and great revision for others and Kevin Brooks gave us an amusing reminder of how to use our Reiki tables safely. We then all joined in an all too brief Reiki share. The day concluded with an emotional and powerful closing ceremony beaming Reiki at each other in the ever-popular ‘Rainbow Walk’. Thanks to Caterina’s 90-year old father, we all took home gift charged with Reiki goodness to inspire us long beyond the Reiki Forum. Events are only as good as the people who attend and this one was a cracker. Waikato Reiki Committee sends a big thank you to everyone for attending and making the day so special and memorable for all of us. Waikato Reiki Forum Programme Waikato Reiki Committee hope that our account of teachers getting together regionally to organise a Reiki event will inspire other Reiki masters throughout the country to do the same.
