Read, as a teen, and was bowled over by his Hall of Mirrors, in Russian translation, in the Foreign Literature magazine, in early 70s (I think). (Still remember the epigraph from Robert Lowell, in Andrey Voznesenskys translation.) Then read Dog Soldiers, already in English. Was fortunate to meet him, through a mutual friend, a couple of times in New York, in 1993 or 94. He had the most lucid, piercing pale-blue eyes and looked like a viking and spoke little. A bona fide great American writer. RIP.
