Read the Proverb of the Day: Proverbs 1 Todays Wisdom: Why Wisdom? Proverbs 1:8 The theme of the Book of Proverbs is Wisdom. It is mentioned 125 times, because the aim of this book is to help us acquire and apply God’s wisdom to the decisions and activities of daily life. Dr. Roy Zuck, from Dallas Theological Seminary, defines wisdom like this: “Wisdom means being skillful and successful in one’s relationships and responsibilities, observing and following the Creator’s principles of order in the moral universe.” In Proverbs 1, the first six verses explain why the Book of Proverbs was written: to give us wisdom, instruction, understanding, subtlety (prudence), knowledge, discretion, learning and counsel. Everything depends on wisdom. You will find these eight words repeated often in the Book of Proverbs. When you put them together, you have a summary of what Solomon means by wisdom. In short, wisdom is seeing life from God’s point of view. Proverbs 8:11 says it is better than rubies and nothing compares with it. When God asked Solomon what one thing he desired, he said “Wisdom.” Ever wonder why God was pleased with Solomon’s choice? I believe He is pleased when we choose wisdom, as well. Think with me of three reasons why we should choose wisdom. I. Wisdom Is the Purpose of the Father 1. Every father desires wisdom for his sons and daughters. Solomon was no exception. In Proverbs 1:8, he says, “My son, hear the instruction of your father.” 2. These words are not only to Solomon’s sons, but to God’s sons. They are wise words to the “King’s kids.” II. Wisdom Is the Product of the Spirit 1. Proverbs 1:2-3 says in order for us to find wisdom, there needs to be a teacher. 2. The Holy Spirit is called the “Spirit of Wisdom.” Genuine wisdom is supernatural. Common sense is natural. Wisdom is uncommon sense. It originated with God, resides in God, emanates from God, and is given as a gift from God. 3. Knowledge is needed to pass the tests in school. Wisdom is needed to pass the tests in life. Knowledge is learned – wisdom is given. Knowledge comes by looking around. Wisdom comes by meditation with God. Wisdom teaches one how to apply his knowledge. 4. Wisdom is not a substitute for knowledge, and knowledge is never a stand-in for wisdom. The Bible indicates that a wise person will study. III. Wisdom Is the Presence of the Savior 1. Proverbs 1:2, “To know wisdom…” To know wisdom is to know Jesus Christ. 2. 1 Cor. 1:24, “Christ is the wisdom of God.” Apart from Christ, there is no wisdom. 3. Wisdom commences at conversation, but it deepens by discipleship. Proverbs 1:7, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” --Ken Whitten
