Read the blog of Chevening Scholar SY 2013-14 Donn Valdez on his Chevening experience entitled, You will never be tired of London. Donn is currently taking up an MSc in Health Policy, Planning and Financing at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine under the British Chevening Scholarships. Donn is a licensed physician and served as the Executive Assistant of the Secretary of Health for three years before flying to the UK to pursue his graduate studies. Following his scholarship, he aims to go back and work for government, ensuring that the health policy directions that will be undertaken are evidence based and geared towards improvement of health outcomes and ultimately, poverty reduction and human development. Belows an excerpt of his blog: ..My stay in London allowed me to observe the intricacies and workings of Her Majesty’s government. I feel a mix of amusement and wonder watching on BBC the leader of the opposition twit the Prime Minister, and vice versa during Prime Minister’s Questions. These are questions on policy and the performance, couched in parliamentary language yet flavored with a curious mix of acerbity, sarcasm and irony, all the better for cheering and jeering MPs. Any great city has challenges; what I gather from conversations with Londoners, the television, newspapers and social media are concerns on the property boom, immigration and the rising costs of living. I observe with great interest how these burning issues shape the political discourse given that parliamentary and city elections will be next year. This city has stood for millennia, with its fortunes ebbing and flowing over time and survived numerous upheavals such as the Great Fire of 1666 and the Biitz of World War II. I will forever be thankful for the opportunity to experience all that London can offer. Samuel Johnson’s oft-repeated quote remains true today, 300 years after it was first uttered. I will never be tired of London. Read the full text of his blog on this page: bit.ly/1qR09pw The Official Chevening Page
