In sharing her experience as a mother, Lorraine offers insights into her family’s experience with Ontario’s educational system in trying to ensure her daughter who has Down syndrome receives dignity within that system and her right to public education. This memoir is compelling, rich and moving. Lorraine, her family and some committed advocates refused to be bound by the stereotypes that some in the educational system sought to label her daughter and were determined to question authorities in both the educational and legal systems to ensure fairness and accountability with regard to her child‘s access to education and specialized aides. We also learn of courageous and tender moments that focused the family on hope, living and loving. In the course of events that take place over almost 20 years, we watch how each family member grows in strength and confidence. We learn how they sought to share their knowledge and breakthroughs with other families to help ease their way through the challenges of the educational system and ensure their children’s entitlement to public education. This book is about finding strength, time, beauty and hope and reveling in small every day miracles. Its an engaging read and invites reflection about our society’s vulnerable citizens, the importance of the right to education for all and how one individual/one family can make a tremendous difference in the lives of countless others. Kind regards, Katherine Mau”
