Friend of the museum, Bill Boggess down in Florida, emailed some news today concerning one of Carthages citizens that arrived around 1874 - Hungarian immigrant, Maj Raphael Guido Rombauer. Street north of Fairview east from Baker Blvd is named Rombauer. findagrave/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=116037267 and family. . Rombauer family was involved in 1848-49 fight for freedom in Europe. His father escaped making his way to Davenport IA & later wife brought family to Davenport. Family saw opportunities in Saint Louis area so removed there. With his three brothers & brother-in-law, Raphael joined the Union cause during the Civil War. Raphael was Gen U S Grants interrupter of messages from Gen Fremont which were passed in Hungarian to confuse the Confederates. He later married & ended up in Carthage being involved with Norris Hoods son-in-law Lon Cunninghams effort to introduce railroads to Carthage. He became a coal mine operator in Pittsburg KS while residing at 213 W 6th in Carthage. Raphael lost two children in Carthage & after quarter of century in Carthage, removed to Adair County where his wife died in 1899, but was buried with her children here in Park Cemetery. Raphael died 1912 in Kirksville MO. His body was sent to Saint Louis to be cremated where it remained unclaimed for 102 years until his 2nd great-granddaughter picked cremains up & is bringing them to Carthage Sept 27, 2014, to be interned with his wife after 115 years of separation. Ceremony will be held when his Civil War gravestone is installed.
