Read your Bible through in a year: Isaiah 64, 65, 66: Yesterday we left off with Isaiah’s prayer of penitence for his nation and that is where we pick up today. Yesterday Isaiah called for God to look down from heaven and see that His zeal and strength have been removed from Israel. Today Isaiah pleas for God to come down from the heavens and shake the earth and cause His enemies to tremble. Isaiah acknowledges God’s anger for Israel’s sins asking for God’s mercy and salvation. God has consumed His people because of their sins so their lives fade away like leaves. Isaiah calls God as a Father and commits Israel into His hands to mold them as He wants and restore His glory to Israel and Jerusalem. God responds to Isaiah’s call telling of how His children had spat in His face and rejected Him when He called. It was like a nasty smoke that went to His face. God will discipline His children who have done wickedly. Even so, God will set aside a remnant to take up the inheritance of Israel on earth. Those who have sought other gods and turned away from God will be destroyed for their own sins. Further, God promises to bless those who have chosen Him and curse those who have turned away. Next up, God tells of a new heavens and new earth in which there will be no crying, only joy, and the old heavens and the old earth will vanish without even a thought. In this new heavens and new earth people will live to their full length of days, no more dying children, and old men will be as old as long-living trees. Also, a man will enjoy his work and have provision from his own hands, without laboring in vain. The wolf and the lamb will eat together and the lion will eat straw like an ox. Heaven is God’s throne and earth is His footstool, so how are humans going to build God a house? God lives with and is near to those who are poor and have a contrite spirit, those who tremble at His name. People have chosen their own way and God will reward them accordingly. Further, God vindicates Zion and promises that He has brought them to trial and tribulation in order to bring them back to Himself for His glory. Everyone will be comforted in Jerusalem. When God comes to restore Israel and Jerusalem He will also bring His wrath on His enemies and destroy them. The new heavens and new earth will be filled with people who worship God and look on the corpses of men who transgressed against God where the worm does not die and the fire is never quenched.
