Reader Gary Marquardt sent us this message last Friday, and hes allowing us to post his tribute here: From: Gary Marquardt 1969 Grad. NDSCS Its funny who pops up in your life to be really important and influential. Today a GREAT one left this world. Grace Layman, Wahpeton, ND... She was the cleaning lady in our Dorm in College. Who ever says they became friends with the cleaning lady in their dorm???? She was figuratively the Mother to hundreds of young men experiencing college life in the dormitories of my college. Grace Layman became a life-long friend and one of the sweetest, funniest and pleasant people one could ever be around. Her gravely voice was one full of wisdom and expectation for each kid she came to know. For me, she was extra special because she was a family friend of Joanies and her daughter Judy Coleman (shown here with Grace) was one of Joanies very best friends. When we had done some dumb things and ran into Grace in the hall the next day, she always knew already what had gone down and who were the culprits. She knew the difference between dorm prank and really really stupid and she made sure we knew that SHE wasnt going to tolerate any of Her Boys getting into what she called REAL TROUBLE. We never wanted to disappoint her. She was a consummate supporter of the college and my biggest cheer leader in football. You never held high office Gracie but you held a high place in the lives of many young people who tried to love you as much as you did us but sadly it was a competition we couldnt win. RIP
