Reader Mail (deport): The pro immigration crowd such as yourself has done an excellent but disingenuous job at conflating legal and illegal immigration. I contend that a very small fraction of United States citizens are nativists and thus against an immigration policy that would include Latino citizens. After all, we depend on them to do the very valuable and appreciated work they are doing here. The fear you cite stems from the possibility of awarding illegal immigrants the status of citizenship or legal residency. Many in this country still believe in the rule of law. The 11 million plus illegals here now broke the laws of the United States of America by entering this country illegally. Furthermore, to grant those illegals present here now legal status is to overlook a very important fact. As soon as they are granted legal status, their pay will have to comport with the minimum wage labor laws of this country. And then, look for a new wave of illegals who will come across the border willing to work at less than minimum wage and take over the jobs currently held by illegals. Who will the employers hire? Those they can pay less. The cycle will continue. Secure the border, institute a huge work visa program with the possibility of earning citizenship status, but offered only to those who are currently in Mexico, and then there will be wide agreement among the American people to welcome Latinos.
