Reading 24: The Gospel According to Mark They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. Context & Questions: Evil holds on to people in many ways. We try to bind it ourselves—humans have been trying for a long time—but we find we are unable to. No one is strong enough. And evil, when it has its way, cuts and harms us. The destruction of God’s good creation is its goal. Jesus here ventures into territory that was not Jewish, overrun by pagans. The scene here says “unclean” on multiple levels: Gentile land, an impure spirit, and a man who lives in a graveyard. This will be a test for the Messiah. What happens when God’s kingdom runs directly into the power of evil? Next up: All power is not equal
