Reading 9: The Book of Amos This is what the Lord says: “For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent. They sell the innocent for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name. They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge. In the house of their god they drink wine taken as fines. Context & Questions: The northern kingdom of Israel knows the same law and has the same light. But they too are ignoring God’s good ways. In particular Amos points out their despicable treatment of the poor. Socially, morally, and religiously, they are corrupt. All this is because their hearts are not fundamentally with God in the first place. Because of this, they don’t know how to live. Next up: But look what I’ve done for you
