Reading Allison Effords excellent German Immigrants, Race, and Citizenship in the Civil War Era. Fills in a lot of the gaps re: political culture in the lower Midwest in the 19th century. And presents a smart analysis of how German Americans conceptualized themselves as new American citizens, while substantially remaking American political ideology. I have to wonder, with all the digitization of the 19th century press going on, are there any major efforts to translate and digitize the German language press? All Ive seen are a few edited collections, but nothing on a large scale. I imagine that a fully translated and digitized German American press would open up a lot more avenues of research. Or more people could just learn to read German...
