Reading FOXFIRE by JCO now. A couple thoughts come to mind: 1) What a brilliant book. It got a lot of attention when it came out, and it deserved all the hubbub and more. 2) Part of my claim in my JCO dissertation chapter is that counter-violence against personal or systemic violence is regularly depicted as a means of asserting ones identity/self in JCOs work -- which, conveniently enough for me, follows the Heidegger of TRUTH AND BEING. The fact that this novel is about an all-girl gang in the 1950s that has only male victims basically means it proves my claim about as clearly as possible. JCO even uses tons of Sartrean language about groups formed under duress and the inherent violence within such groups as a cohesive bonding agent. 3) Since I knew the premise of the novel and have owned it for a while now (I think Raúl bought it for me back in November of last year), why the heck did I wait so long to read it? Its going to prove infinitely useful, but now I have to rework and add to what was a nearly complete draft of that chapter. Grrrr.... #jco #stupidgradstudent
