Reading Tullians book Surprised by Grace: But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. (1:3) The repeated phrase here is stunning, even haunting in effect: he “rose to flee . . . from the presence of the LORD. . . . Away from the presence of the LORD.” The additional details here smack of deliberate, headlong intention: Jonah gets up to flee, sets out for the seaport, locates a ship, pays his passage, and gets on board to go. There’s no doubt about it: this guy’s determined to ditch God If the security of the believer depended on us maintaining our relationship with Him, we would all be lost. This narrative should give a clear answer to the neighsayers and to those who deny the security of the believer. Jonah did everything in his power to flee from God, and we do too...every time we choose our own will over His revealed will. Left to ourselves, we would all lose our salvation. We are no better than the prophet. BUT...NO one shall separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. SDG. He will complete the work He has begun in us.
