Reading a picture book manuscript, carefully studying the writers - TopicsExpress

Reading a picture book manuscript, carefully studying the writers cadence, making mental determinations about how to aesthetically interpret the prose, wondering where to graphically exercise restraint to allow the words to take center stage, calculating what pages require white space, searching for the underlying universal truths in the story, imagining the appropriate transition into a scene of particular tension, thinking about electric versus subtle color palettes, anticipating potential visual continuity issues. These are just a few of the things Im considering now as I read a 40-page print out of sparse text -- before even beginning to let my pencil take a sketchy walk with me on drawing paper.
