Reading an interesting book on the corruption in New York city during the 1890s when Teddy Roosevelt was assigned to help clean up the city. Back then, the some of the richest in NYC were the police. To open up a brothel, you had to pay the police $500 upfront, with monthly payments of $50. Open up a saloon, a gambling den, pay-pay-pay! When a police chief retired in 1895 he was worth $1.5 million! Imagine what that would be worth today!!! Back then, the homeless slept in the basements of the police stations, on wooden slats! I love this book, chockfull of historical quirks!
