Reading my just-arrived Berklee Today magazine, I was saddened to learn of the passing of fellow Berklee College of Music student Randy Coven in the Final Cadence section. Randy was an underappreciated bassist, not a big rock star, but a guy who held down the bottom for some of the big names, including Yngwie Malmsteen, Leslie West, Zakk Wylde and fellow Berklee alumni Steve Vai; Coven was roommates with guitarist Steve Vai at Berklee, leading to a lifetime friendship. I do not recall knowing Randy personally, but knowing that we walked the same halls, had the same teachers, partied at the same spots, ate at the same places, played in the same rooms... it touches my heart.
