Reading this incredible news today takes me back to my first Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Annual Conference in April of last year. I had just made the transition from a 15 year volunteer for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society into the role of Executive Director for the Central Ohio Chapter. Dr. David Porter was a guest speaker at this conference. He presented data from the personalized immunotherapy that he, Dr. Carl June and their colleagues at UPENN had been working on. LLS has been funding Dr. June and his team since 1998. I will never forget Dr. Porters genuine appreciation when he shared with the audience of LLS employees and volunteers that, from the beginning of their research through 2012, they had received $17 million in funding to advance this therapy. Of that funding, only $1 million came from the NIH. The remaining $16 million came from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He was very clear when he stated that this therapy would have never made it to the point of saving lives had it not been for the commitment of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. LLS has increased our commitment of this breakthrough therapy with another $5 million for a total of $21 million through 2017. Cures TODAY. Not someday. Thats the goal and our dedicated volunteers and generous donors are at the HEART of it! Someday is TODAY! uphs.upenn.edu/news/News_Releases/2014/07/ctl019/
