Reading through all the political hullabaloo about Buhari and his - TopicsExpress

Reading through all the political hullabaloo about Buhari and his having a secondary school leaving certificate... I think some people might be missing the appropriate pivotal perspective on the saga... For me the perplexing issue is not as much as: whether Buhari has a secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent rather the question begging clarification should be whether Buhari was a beneficiary of corruption whereby he was admitted into the military without requisite academic minimum qualification and/ or misrepresentation of his academic results either willfully or otherwise. One thing is clear and indisputable thus far; Buhari failed Mathematics in contradiction to the recommendation letter submitted on his behalf by his school principal who indicated surety of Buhari passing English and Mathematics. Based on the released results he received a grade of Credit or better in 5 subjects, a Pass in 1 subject, and Failed 2 subjects - Mathematics being one of the failed subject. Relevant point of concern/ contention then becomes will such result (emphasis on failed Mathematics grade) typically gain an applicant admissions into Nigerian military without bribery or resorting to other corrupt practices? The Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) website stipulate the following as academic requirements for admission: Eligibility for Entry into the NDA Regular Course To be eligible for ADMISSION into the regular course in the Nigerian Defence Academy, a candidate must meet the following requirements: Minimum of 5 credit passes with English and Mathematics at the Senior Secondary CERTIFICATE Examination conducted by the West Africa Examination Council or National Examination Commission or General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level or Grade II Teachers Certificate obtained in not more than 2 sittings relevant to the Faculty of their choices. At least one supporting relevant credit to the compulsory credits in Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Faculty of Science. However, only one supporting relevant credit is required in the Faculty of Engineering... nda.edu.ng/content.php?pid=19 Based on the above admission criteria; Buhari failing Mathematics would not have been eligible for admission into the military unless someone bent the rules (embraced corruption) thus circumventing the admission process. Our collective focus for the sake of gaining enlightenment and closure on this saga should be: 1.) Whether Buhari was a beneficiary of corruption in his gaining admission into the military? 2.) Did he meet the prerequisite minimum academic requirements and should he had been admitted in 1961 before the availability of his WASSCE results?? 3.) Was passing English and Mathematics with a grade of Credit or better a prerequisite to gaining admission into Nigerian military back in 1961? 4.) Who else benefited from such corrupt circumvention of the admission rules??? 5.) Will Buhari still be heralded as an anti corruption czar if he had benefited from the same corrupt practices to gain admission into the military? Food for thought!!!
