Reading, with tears in my eyes, Bill Brysons In a Sunburned Country - Finding that: Melbourne, at that time [1860s] much larger than Sydney, was one of the most important cities in the British empire, and yet one of the most isolated. To get a message to London and receive a reply took a third of a year, sometimes more. Thinking (with more tears in my eyes) of my written communications with the Government of Canada receiving a reply took half a year, sometimes more. Telephoning from Victoria (not Australia) I was informed there was a 7 month back-log. After nine months I got a request for more information and the promise that: If we do not receive a reply from you within 60 days, we will end the review of your application.
