Reagan was the first Republican I ever voted for, and Im glad that I was able to vote for a man who was without question the most beneficial modern President for America and the greatest President of the 20th century. My favorite story about Reagan is this: Robert Novak, who in his earlier years had been a hard-Left intellectual but had gradually (along with people like George Orwell and James Burnham) seen the light and become a Conservative was set for his first face to face interview with the newly elected Ronald Reagan. Novak was not expecting much from the interview. He expected Ronald Reagan to be something of an intellectual lightweight. After all, Reagan was dumb, he was a Hollywood actor, a cowboy, or so the general media opinion had made it seem. Novak wrote how he asked his first question of Reagan What books have influenced you most about politics and economics? Novak says Reagan tilted his head, Reagan style, smiled, and said Well, thats a big question and then stayed silent for about 15 seconds. Novak said his heart sank, that Reagan was about to reveal himself to be totally clueless, and then, to Novaks surprise Reagan launched into an almost 30 minute monologue listing and discussing all the writers who had influenced him and how. Novak wrote how I was rapidly taking notes, and although I was extremely well read on these issues, and knew many of the names Reagan was reeling off, I was amazed to hear him commenting on them all out of an obvious depth of knowledge, and even more surprised to hear him discussing writers I knew by name but had never gotten around to reading. Novak wrote how that interview changed his whole perspective of Reagan, and he came away completely impressed with the depth and breadth of Reagans knowledge, and with his ready command of so many disparate facts. I have to laugh at intelligent Liberals who love to proclaim how stupid Reagan was, and then go on to abase themselves before the godlike genius and wisdom of ....... a Barack Obama!
