Real Madrid’s desire to freshen up their midfield this summer could have a positive effect on Arsenals own activity, with reports in Spain claiming the Gunners could make a move for Sami Khedira. talkSPORT’s Transfer Spotlight takes a look at the Germany international… Name: Sami Khedira Date of birth: 4 April, 1987 Birthplace: Stuttgart, West Germany Position: Defensive midfielder Club: Real Madrid International appearances: 46 (Germany) Honours: Bundesliga (2006/08), Copa del Rey (2010/11), La Liga (2011/12), Champions League (2013/14) Whats the latest? Khedira spent most of last season out through injury, and Madrid’s pursuit of the likes of Marco Verratti and Paul Pogba suggests the Spanish club are ready to move him on. The Spanish club want to wait until the World Cup is over before they sanction any deals however, presumably in anticipation of a good showing from their midfielder, which could raise his fee. Did you know? 1) Born to a Tunisian father and German mother, Khedira joined Stuttgarts academy in 1995. His younger brother Rani still plays for the club. 2) Khedira made his first team debut against Hertha Berlin on October 1, 2006. His first goal was followed by his second in the same game when he scored a brace against Schalke later that month. At the end of the 2006/07 season he lifted the Bundesliga title with the team. 3) Following a strong campaign with Germany at the 2010 World Cup, where he done an admirable job of replacing Michael Ballack, Real Madrid signed Khedira from Dortmund for an undisclosed fee. He made 40 appearances for Madrid in all competitions during his first season at the Bernabeu, winning the Copa del Rey. 4) After failing to score in his first season with Madrid, Khedira managed to do so on four occasions during the 2011/12 campaign, and better still, finished the season as a league title winner with Los Blancos. With 42 appearances for Madrid across the Champions League, Cup, Supercup and La Liga, he was one of Jose Mourinhos most used players that year. After a lengthy injury layoff last season, meanwhile, he returned to start in Madrid’s Champions League final victory over city rivals Atletico in Lisbon. 5) Khedira is a firmly established Germany international, which is of little surprise given his history as a youth star for his nation. He captained Germanys U21s in their 2009 UEFA European U21 Championship win, and made his senior debut in September 2009 soon after. The midfielder played every game for Germany at the 2010 World Cup. They say “Khedira is a dynamic midfielder with loads of energy, who thrives on winning the ball back and joining the attack. He is excellent in the air, and has a strong shot from medium distance.” Real Madrids official website on Khediras strengths............Islam
