Real Topics - Immigration (take 2) I posted some thoughts yesterday hoping that some people would share them and talk about them. Didnt see many shares, but I was asked to continue, so here is a shot at another facet of the immigration issue. Please discuss and share. Feel free to take credit. Asylum and Amnesty Asylum - The US offers asylum to refugees under international treay established in 1951. This boils down to one simple thing - Compassion. The treaty was established to protect people from persuction or other inhumane treatment. There is not much to change here. We are human. Amnesty - Amnesty is treated like a dirty word lately, but deserves discussion and consideration. There are four important considerations when discussing amnesty vs deployment 1 - Cost. In 2011, the ICE reported the average cost of deportation at $12,500.00 per person. Multiply this by the estimated 11 million illegals in the countyry, and the totals are staggering. This doesnot include the fact that a depportation of this scale would require a massive upswing in manpower, detainment facilities, and lawyers. The costs just keep climbing. 2 - Economic effect. Most of the illegal aliens are working and contributing to the economy. While many of these are general labor, we know that many of these positions are skilled labor. We donot have accurate numbers, for obvious reasons, but this is an important consideration. deporting several million people will have a striking effect short term on the economy and on an unknown number of businesses. 3 - Federal/State assistance costs. This is an interesting one, and one that I am going to place a challenge on. I have found no evidence, and in past requests have not been sent a single peice of evidence, that illegal immigrants are collecting federal benefits. They do not qualify for aid, or assistance, cannot purchase insurance, and cannot collect umemployment or even a tax return of overpayment. If someone has evidence to the contrary, I have asked for it many times. Show me. 4 - Compassion. this is a human issue. there are many cases were deporting immigrants means splitting up families, deporting children, sending elderly back to an environment where they have nothing and nowhere to go. This bears consideration. What are we willing to live with? My proposal - I strongly believe that enforcement on the illegal employment issue is critical. I also believe that it is just humanly wrong to split up families. those two I am strong on. With this said, they either need to close the policy of not sending a child back, or extend that to families with children. It is not acceptable to strand a child here without their parents. I think that the best solution is to grant amnesty for anyone who can document that they have had steady employment and participation for their entire tenure, and can continue to contribute, or those who are sponsored and supported by others. The limit of amnesty should be amnesty from deportment for illegal entry. I agree with Obamas idea of setting the latest window at entrants prior to 2010 Candidates should be required to register as a new entrance to the country, and should be required to follow all laws and maintain good standing. Benefits and subsidies don;t exist now, and I do not believe that candidates should qualify for them until they gain citizenship. Existing maintenance laws like drivers licenses, insurance (including the obamacare requirement at cost), and other obligations should also be met. This satisfies several conditions. 1 - this would greatly reduce the cost and workload required, and puts the legwork of gathering paperwork to the immigrant, not the investigator 2 - this reduces the number of undocumented immediately, making it much easier to track down the outliers with existing resources. 3 - this gives us the ability to enforce illegal labor laws without crippling regions which would otherwise be hugely affected. 4 - The documentation and ID requirements, and the overhaul necessary to support them, are the same systems that we use for local IDs, solving other unrelated issues (Voter Registration, Citizen ID issues, Uninsured patient/driver issues) Let me know what you think. Maybe I can fit one more in tomorrow if people want.
