Reality is an illusion has been extensively considered in Western philosophy. Descartes supposedly refuted it by faith in God (and said that no other refutation was possible); Kant used it implicitly as the basis of his noumenal/phenomal distinction and the dismemberment of science from the humanities. But what is an illusion? An illusion is a perception, either based on valid sensations (as in hallucinations or magic tricks) or cognitive fidgeting (as in dreams); a perception which contradicts reality. So reality is an illusion means that reality contradicts itself, which is the most damning confession a professional intellectual could make.
