Really Touchy Subjects in America There are several subjects in America where widespread rational discussion among lay people -- even nominally well informed or educated ones -- is almost impossible. I identify a few: macro economics race IQ testing the rationality of conservatives university rankings genetic criminal predispositions top university educations scientific method the income distribution religion politics Americans simply become lost in their biases and acrimony when serious rational discussions is attempted on these subjects. Consenses are possible only in small like-biased groups. There are almost litmus tests for admission to such groups. Dogma is well defined. Variances or questioning is prohibited. Sour grapes is sometimes involved. Thought is out the window. This quandary is one reason America is stalled out, not progressing nor solving its problems well.
