Really conflicted after watching this in class last night. On the one hand, it is addressing something I care deeply about. And it claims to be finding women who are in and from these places making a difference, and I like that. But it doesnt let them tell their own stories, so this cult of celebrity going on instead feels awfully contrived. And it seems like as often/more often than not, these Westerners/Americans who invite themselves into these spaces do more harm than good, even on camera. They just arent in a position to be sensitive to the nuances of the culture and the utter ordinariness of the awful things they are documenting for the people who are actually living them. Its kind of painful to watch. Patting girls on the back for being brave and revolutionary, then leaving them to face the scorn of an entire ideology while you fly off to do it all over again.
