Really struggling to write this one. Clearly weve achieved what we set out to and so the adventure is over. It would be easy to feel sad, but we knew it was a short trip and we had a great time getting to the end of it. I honestly cant think of anything bad. Everything about narrowboats appeals to me. The feeling of not being tied to a place is a massive draw. I remember seeing tv programs of working boats and the families who worked them. It was clearly a hard life but with a definite attraction. Preparing a meal is so much easier when everything is within a single steps reach. When it only takes four hours to clean from top to bottom, inside and out, I could get excited about housework. When you can only move at walking pace, you dont have much choice but to slow life down. Much needed and appreciated. I wonder if you can get narrowboats on prescription? Weve seen so many beautiful boats throughout the trip. Weve seen some pig ugly ones as well, but hey, each to their own. I think my favourite boats have to be the traditional working barges with the tarpaulin covers along most of their length. Both Jerry and myself found ourselves leaning over to get a look at the beautiful engines as we passed. Theyve a really distinctive sound and they seem so much quieter as they run much slower. Im sure we passed one on the way out of a lock that was doing about 45 rpm. In a total of 78 hours, we covered 152 miles and went through 181 locks. Id hate to work out how many times I turned the windlass but Id have a much harder job working out how many cups of tea we drank. Im going to try hard not to think about times I emptied the toilet. I still feel dirty. So for the last time, Ben and Jerry, signing off. Thanks to Mimi and Jerry for the experience, my Wife for letting me go and all you folks for following along with us.
