Really? ...would it not be better for us to return to Egypt? - TopicsExpress

Really? ...would it not be better for us to return to Egypt? (Numbers 14:3 NASB95) I know that we are often told that there are no stupid questions, but sometimes I doubt the truth of that statement. In fact, this one appears to me like the ultimate stupid question. Consider what they had experienced in Egypt: a Pharaoh who didnt know his history and had no regard for the Jews, one who placed them into forced slave labor simply because of their race, one who would not allow the simplest of freedoms (the freedom of worship), one who killed their baby boys in a display of abject evil. Would it be better to go back? In addition, this same Pharaoh had experienced the sting and humiliation of defeat at the Red Sea, losing his army in the process. With this history, would it not be better for us to return to Egypt is not only a stupid question, it is a downright deadly one! If the people of Israel, in dejection, turned and marched the journey back to Egypt, they would be met with sudden death. Israel would be wiped off the face of the map before it ever got on the map! When people -- be they politicians, pastors, or prognosticators -- bring forth ideas, those ideas should be examined for their value. The assumptions upon which the ideas are built should be poked and prodded for validity. The idea should be projected into the future and its outcome tested by its presumed results. The next time you hear a stupid idea, press the issue. Bring it to its full conclusion and make the presenter defend it. When stupid ideas float about, unhindered, the well-being of the nation is in danger.
