Reason #78,439 Common Core Is A Bad Idea: It Is Wasting EVERYONES Time!! We had open house tonight for my 4th Grader. They meet in a small portable room. It was cramped; packed full of parents, students, siblings and one sweaty teacher. I dont think her perspiration was a result of the temperature as much as it was resulting from the parents putting the heat on her regarding this debacle that is the Common Core Standard. There were 7 parents that were waiting in line to speak with the teacher about their respective student(s). They waited...patiently...while she attempted to explain the common core method. They...we...waited patiently while she explained the common core method... ...to other parents. Yes, the open house was temporarily closed while the teacher did her best to convey the idiotic genius of common core to three parents. Only these students, unlike the students she mentors daily, have the mental capacity to recognize and challenge her for what it is...a waste of time. And challenge her they did!! And it was glorious! One parent walked away STILL not completely understanding the logic (if there is any) behind this new math. Another very vocal and frustrated father inquired, Why cant they just learn that 8+7=15? Why do you have them pull out these personal whiteboards and markers and add all these other numbers and go through all this effort for 8+7? Its 15...thats it! Then move them on to 8+8. Thats 16. I just taught two problems in less than a minute. The third parent, that was apparently there first, continued asking the teacher to show her...again...not how to find ten-thousands and hundred-thousands, but how SHE is supposed to TELL her kid how to do it. Her justification was, I know how to find it, but I dont know how the heck to show my kid to find it the way you want me to. This aint the math I took when I was her age. That is the phrase of the century: This AINT the math we took, indeed.
