Reason number 589 why patients need advocates: I have sat here all - TopicsExpress

Reason number 589 why patients need advocates: I have sat here all day long, every day this week, waiting for the surgeon to grace me with his presence. I have learned that he comes late at night (literally, sometimes at midnight), and that he sends a resident in the morning (early, like around 7) who may or may not know what is up for the day. The surgeon makes statements to the effect that the next mornings bloodwork will determine the next days plans, yet never reports the results of that blood draw until the next night. So, we sit. This is a not a situation we are experiencing alone. The same thing is happening with Moms roommate who has the same doctor. Think about it: if you only see the doctor at 7:00 a.m. and midnight, and you need someone who is not sick to interpret what he says for you, how many families are likely to be sitting in this unit uninformed and with questions? Roommates husband said to me today, as he was leaving for home an hours drive away, I sure would like to see the doctor and be able to visit with him. When I told him hed have to be here in the late night, he sadly shook his head. This is healthcare. This is our healthcare in the U.S. This is not right. Patients deserve the attention of their providers, not just when it is convenient for the provider. I am all for understanding the constraints that a doctor may face, but I have to say that this seems to be more a matter of choice than an issue of availability. Bottom line - I wont be going home tonight...again. Bottom line - Mom is still in a great deal of pain, and the answer for that pain is here, we just cannot reach it. #patientexperience #customerservice #empathy #pxjournal
