Rebecca French THE exact number of homeless people on the stunning Redcliffe Peninsula north of Brisbane is unclear but residents say there has been a visible increase and they want to find ways to help. About 150 people are registered as being homeless, but many are not registered or counted in Census statistics. There has been a visible increase recently in the number of people sleeping under the Redcliffe Jetty, in parks and suburban streets. Of the 150 people registered as having no fixed address in the Redcliffe area, 13 of those are sleeping out in improvised dwellings or tents, 31 in supported accommodation, 44 in severely crowded dwellings and 62 at a temporary residence. A spokeswoman for Homelessness Australia said the situation in Redcliffe was ``pretty worrying and urged locals not to turn a blind eye. ``Most people think that people who are experiencing homelessness are scary and dangerous, she said. ``The reality is that many people experiencing homelessness are women (44 per cent) and children (17 per cent under 12) and are homeless because they are victims of domestic and family violence, or just not earning enough money to keep up with the cost of living. Rose Butler is a case worker in the early prevention into homelessness program at Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Centre, which has taken over many of the Redcliffe services since Regional Community Association Moreton Bay folded at the end of March. Ms Butler said the latest estimate was about 3500 homeless in the Moreton Bay region, but that figure could be much higher. The Redcliffe community is doing what it can to help, with a free hot breakfast offered three times a week in Redcliffes CBD. Breakfast Club co-ordinator Ros Thomsen said one-third of the regular attendees had no fixed address and were living in cars, caravans, sleeping rough or couch-surfing. Rotary Redcliffe Sunrise president Colin Scobie said the group handed out about 100 shelter packs each year in Redcliffe, which include toiletries, pillows, blankets and food items.
